The Synchilla Snap-T is one of Patagonia’s most iconic pieces. Patagonia introduced Synchilla fleece in 1985 with Malden Mills (now Polartec), as an alternative to the wool sweaters climbers wore. The name combines “synthetic” and “chinchilla,” after the soft fur it imitates. The Snap-T pairs that fabric with a snap-button placket at the neck, so you can open it up for airflow or close it against the cold. It has a chest pocket with a distinctive flap, designed by Patagonia so sailors could stash sunglasses. The fabric stays warm even when wet and was developed to resist pilling. It started as outdoor gear for skiing and climbing, then became an everyday classic, and the design has changed little since.
